Description

Lunch atop a Skyscraper, is a famous black and white photograph taken during the construction of the RCA Building at Rockefeller Center in New York, United States, in 1932.

The photograph shows eleven construction workers eating lunch, sitting on a beam with their feet
dangling some 840 feet (260 meters) above the streets of New York. The workers do not have any
safety system or harness, so the photo is a true reflection of the labor situation in the United States
during the Great Depression, when people were willing to accept any job, no matter how precarious.
The image was taken on September 20, 1932 on the 69th floor of the RCA Building during the
last months of its construction. Contrary to what might seem and according to the archives, the
workers were not photographed spontaneously, but it would be a
pose after which there was already a previous scenographic work. Although the photo does show real skyscraper workers, it is
believed that the image would have been made to publicize Rockefeller Center.
